Have you ever wonder why Malaysia is still lagging behind while other countries prosper and advance forward? Can one argue that Malaysia is still a new-born country that just gained its independence so it  needs time to develop? If it is measured by how long a country gains its independence, then what about Singapore who gained its independence 5 years after Malaysia? What we are witnessing now is that Singapore is ahead of Malaysia almost in everything. Or is it because of the age of our country? Well, India and Egypt are more than 2000 years old and unfortunately they are still poor and lagging behind. Malaysia has abundant of natural resources, yet we’re still not as prosperous as Japan that has limited resources, limited territory, 80% of its land is mountainous, hence inadequate for agriculture and cattle raising BUT Japan is still second in economy.

So why some countries are doing well while Malaysia isn’t?

What makes the difference is the ATTITUDE of the Malaysians. If we analyze the behaviour of the people in rich and developed countries, we can find that vast majority of them have good principles in their lives. I have discovered a few principles that most Malaysians are lacking.

  1. Ethics, as a basic principle
  2. Integrity
  3. Responsibility
  4. Respect to the laws and rules
  5. Respect to the rights of other citizens
  6. Work loving
  7. Will of super action
  8. Punctuality

Malaysians generally lack these values. I dare say 80% of Malaysians only have one or two values as mentioned. Those are the ingredients for a great nation. If Malaysia wants to stand on the same height with other developed countries, the people must change their attitudes.

To put the country right in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right (Confucious 551 BC – 479 BC).
