PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia, through the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) contact group, will initiate the convening of a special United Nations general assembly to discuss on Israel’s brutal attacks against Palestine.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has directed Wisma Putra to get Malaysia’s permanent representative to the United Nations to get the ball rolling together with six members of the OIC contact group.
“This is the only way we can set aside the UN security council resolution. We are doing this under the banner of uniting for peace.
“Through the special assembly, the voices of the world community, which strongly condemns Israel’s aggressive and brutal attacks against Palestine can be heard.
“This is also the platform for us to help find a solution to the end the crisis.
“We hope the United States and its allies will not attempt to prevent this special assembly from taking place.
“The world needs to voice out as we cannot accept the cruelty that is happening in the Middle East,” he said.
Speaking at the Prime Minister’s Department monthly gathering – the first to be held this year – the Prime Minister said Malaysia condemned attacks against Palestine which saw dozens of innocent civilians, including children, get killed or injured.
“What Israel claims is a response to Hamas’ action is just as an excuse. The excessive attacks are as if they want to bury Palestine. That is how we perceive the situation.
“I hope our officers at the UN can convince the rest on the importance and urgency to convene this special meeting,” he said.
The Prime Minister also criticised the United States for not playing their role and influence as a superpower to prevent Israel’s aggression but had instead allowed Palestine to be attacked and had vetoed a security council plan to send a UN observer force to the crisis-hit area.
“The US can show the world that it is a responsible superpower but instead, it chose to ignore the situation and has allowed Israel to do whatever it likes against Palestine,” he said.
Abdullah said the Israel-Palestine crisis would not help in maintaining peace and stability, something the world badly needed as the global economy was facing a meltdown.
In PETALING JAYA, Pakatan Rakyat MPs urged the Prime Minister to call for an emergency meeting in the Dewan Rakyat to discuss Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.
“Various quarters of the community in Malaysia have expressed their views in rejecting the violence perpetrated by Israel.
“On behalf of all Malaysians, we urge the Prime Mnister to hold an emergency meeting in Dewan Rakyat to discuss this matter. It is very important that the people of this country make a stand to join the international community in voicing their objection against Israel’s violence and throwing their moral support behind the Palestinians,” they said in a statement.
DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang added in another statement that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon should spearhead world condemnation of the Israeli invasion of Gaza.
“The failure of UN Security Council to call for an immediate ceasefire and the role of the US government in blocking a UN Security Council ceasefire resolution must be deplored by all peace-loving nations and people.
“US President-elect Barrack Obama, who will be inaugurated as president in a fortnight’s time, should pledge to end the United States’ carte blanche support to Israeli aggression under his administration,” he said.
